The basis for the symphonic wind arrangements performed by the Salzburg Wind Philharmonic is not so much traditional wind music but rather chamber music for winds and the treatment for winds by the great symphonic writers from the Classical period to Richard Strauss. In these symphonic arrangements for wind instruments – numerous excellent versions for the Salzburg Wind Philharmonic were tailor-made by Albert Schwarzmann – the artistic aspect of orchestral writing and instrumentation has absolute priority. Any kind of schematic form which could impede the evocation of sound painting is avoided. By employing varying constellations of instruments, a richness of sound colours is achieved appropriate to each specific piece of music while ensuring utmost transparency as usually found in the symphony orchestra. Besides variably orchestrated symphonic works, compositions for strings, piano, mixed ensemble and wind music are transformed into arrangements for symphonic winds. These new versions for symphonic winds, which have received great critical acclaim from specialists, are Salzburg Wind Philharmonic, but they also provide practical new repertoire for wind orchestras.

Albert Schwarzmann, born in 1968 in Innsbruck, graduated in horn playing from the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, and in conducting from the Tyrol Regional Conservatory in Innsbruck. For several years he has been intensively preoccupied with symphonic wind music and has so far arranged over 400 works for various orchestrations. Albert Schwarzmann has taught among others instrumentation and arrangement for wind orchestra conducting at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg since 2006.
